Repair or replace your air conditioner?
We repair first when it makes sense. A common rule of thumb is to multiply the system’s age by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000, replacement is usually the better value. We’ll give you upfront quotes for both options.
Replacement is usually worth considering when:
- The AC is about 12–15 years old or older.
- It uses R-22 refrigerant. Systems made before 2010 often do. R-22 hasn't been produced or imported in the U.S. since January 1, 2020 (EPA), so recharging a leaking system is costly.
- The compressor or outdoor coil has failed, and the repair costs a large share of a new system.
- Your electric bills keep rising or the house won't stay cool on hot days.
- It's needed several repairs in the last couple of years.
Sizing your new AC correctly
Bigger isn’t better. An oversized AC cools quickly but shuts off before it removes humidity, leaving the house cool and clammy. An undersized one runs nonstop on hot days.
We size the system with a load calculation for your home and check the ductwork, coil and refrigerant lines so the new system performs as rated.
Efficiency: understanding SEER2
SEER2 measures cooling efficiency, and a higher number means lower electric bills. In the northern U.S., including Illinois, new split-system central air conditioners must meet at least 13.4 SEER2 under current federal standards. Higher-efficiency systems and two-stage or variable-speed compressors cost more upfront but run quieter, control humidity better and use less electricity.
Consider a heat pump. A heat pump cools like an AC and also heats your home efficiently, and it can work alongside your gas furnace as a dual-fuel system. Heat pumps are also what ComEd rebates focus on.
We’ll show you the trade-offs for your home and budget.
ComEd rebates and financing
Windy City HVAC Repair is an enrolled ComEd participating contractor. ComEd offers rebates on qualifying ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-split heat pumps, and we’ll help you check which equipment qualifies.
Rebates are subject to change, and the program may end at any time. Eligibility is decided by ComEd. Financing is available, so you can replace a failing system now instead of waiting.
AC replacements are usually completed in one day, scheduled after the estimate.
Installation day
1. We remove the old outdoor unit and, where needed, the indoor coil.
2. We install the new system, flush or replace refrigerant lines as needed, and pull a vacuum.
3. We charge the system, test airflow and temperatures, and set up the thermostat.
4. We haul away the old equipment and walk you through the new system.

AC replacement FAQ
Most last about 12–15 years in the Chicago area with regular maintenance.
It depends on the system size, efficiency, features and any line set or ductwork changes. We give you an upfront quote after looking at your home, and financing is available.
You can, but R-22 is expensive and only recovered or stockpiled supplies remain. If the system leaks, replacing it is usually the better long-term choice.
13.4 SEER2 is the federal minimum for new split-system central ACs in Illinois. Higher ratings save more on electric bills. We’ll show you the trade-offs for your home and budget.
It’s worth considering. A heat pump cools like an AC and heats efficiently in fall and spring, and qualifying systems may be eligible for ComEd rebates. Rebates are subject to change, and the program may end.
