What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is one system that both heats and cools your home. In summer it works like a central air conditioner, pulling heat out of your house and releasing it outside. In winter it runs in reverse, pulling heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. It moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it, so it runs on electricity and doesn’t need a gas flame.

A heat pump has an outdoor unit that looks like an AC condenser. It connects to an indoor air handler or furnace (ducted) or to one or more wall or ceiling units (ductless).

Ducted vs. ductless heat pumps

Ducted (central) heat pump: If your home already has ductwork, a ducted heat pump can replace your central AC and send heated or cooled air through the same vents. Before we quote, we check the duct size and condition, because airflow matters even more with a heat pump.

Ductless (mini-split) heat pump: No ducts needed. An outdoor unit connects to indoor units through a small refrigerant line, and each room or zone gets its own control. Ductless is a good fit for additions, sunrooms, finished basements, bonus rooms over the garage and older homes without ductwork. Learn more on our ductless mini-split installation page.

Heat pump vs. furnace: an honest comparison

There isn’t one right answer for every home, so here’s how they compare:

Heat pumpGas furnace
Heats and coolsYes, one system does bothHeats only; pairs with a separate AC
FuelElectricityNatural gas
How it heatsMoves heat from outdoor airBurns gas to create heat
Very cold daysHeating output drops as it gets colder outside, so many homes need backup heatSteady heat no matter the outdoor temperature
Best fitHomes replacing an AC, homes without gas, rooms the main system can’t reachHomes that want strong, steady heat through the coldest stretches

What this means for Chicago-area winters: Our winters bring long stretches of very cold weather. Many homeowners who add a heat pump keep a gas furnace as backup heat for the coldest days. The heat pump handles cooling and milder heating days, and the furnace takes over when it’s bitter cold. Other homes are better off with a high-efficiency furnace and a new AC. We’ll look at your home, your ductwork, your electrical service and your goals, then lay out the options side by side. If a furnace makes more sense for you, we’ll tell you. Sizing: why we start with a load calculation

A heat pump that’s too big short-cycles and doesn’t control humidity well. One that’s too small struggles on the hottest and coldest days. Rather than matching the old equipment’s size, we run a load calculation for your home that accounts for square footage, insulation, windows, layout and how you use each space. We also check your ductwork, your electrical panel and where the outdoor unit can go.

Heat Pump Installation FAQ

Does a heat pump work in a Chicago-area winter?

Yes, but its heating output drops as the outdoor temperature falls. That’s why many Chicago-area homes keep a gas furnace or other backup heat for the coldest days. We’ll tell you honestly whether a heat pump, a furnace or both fits your home.

Can a heat pump replace my air conditioner?

Yes. A heat pump cools just like a central AC. If your AC is due for replacement, a heat pump is worth comparing, since it can also handle some of your heating.

Do I have to get rid of my furnace?

No. Many homeowners keep their existing gas furnace as backup heat and add a heat pump for cooling and milder heating days. We’ll check whether your furnace and ductwork can work with a heat pump.

Do I need ductwork for a heat pump?

Not always. A ducted heat pump uses your existing ducts. A ductless mini-split heat pump needs no ducts and works well for additions, basements and homes without ductwork.

What size heat pump do I need?

That depends on your home, not just its square footage. We size every system with a load calculation that accounts for insulation, windows, layout and how you use each room.

How long does heat pump installation take?

A typical installation is usually done in one day. It’s scheduled after your estimate, not the same day you first call. Larger or more complex jobs can take longer, and we’ll tell you up front.

How much does a heat pump cost?

It depends on the system type, size, ductwork and electrical needs. We give you a clear quote after looking at your home, and flexible financing is available.

Are there rebates or financing for heat pumps?

As an enrolled ComEd participating contractor, we can help you check whether your heat pump qualifies for a ComEd rebate. Rebates are subject to change, and the program may end. Flexible financing is also available.

Will you remove my old equipment?

Yes. We remove and haul away your old equipment as part of the installation.
